THE “BROWN DERBY”
A one-of-a-kind cocktail with a history steeped in identity theft and cultural
appropriation
It was created in the late ’20s with a mysterious origin. This glamorous Hollywood cocktail appears to never have come within 3.000 miles of Hollywood at any time during the 20th century.
While its alter-ego was being served lavishly across the pond and in NYC under the name "De Rigueur".
Enter Sunset Blvd's newest addition in 1933, the Vendôme Café who purportedly named a drink after their arch-rival down the road, the original Brown Derby Restaurant.
The history of this cocktail is murky, to say the least, but all that matters with this drink is that the honey in the Brown Derby is able to bridge the gap between bourbon's sweet, earthy, caramel flavors, and grapefruit's acidic, floral tang to create a timeless drink.
